Collection:

The FIPR Institute Library houses a unique collection of phosphate-related resources.

The collection includes approximately 8,500 books and reports, thousands of volumes of journals, 56 current journal titles, hundreds of maps, numerous company and government brochures, and thousands of news clippings about the FIPR Institute, its predecessor (FIPR), and the Florida phosphate industry.

The FIPR Institute Library is focused on, but not limited to, the following areas as they relate to phosphate in Florida:

History Deposits
Mining Mineral Processing
Geology Chemistry
Fertilizer Production Regulatory Information
Reclamation Land Use
Environmental & Public Health Industry Information
Florida Ecosystems Florida Natural Resources

In keeping with our broadened mission under the 2010 legislation that created the FIPR Institute, the Library is beginning to collect material on biofuels, bioenergy, and the mining of other (non-phosphate) minerals in Florida.  Donations in relevant subject areas are always welcome, and a receipt may be requested by donors for tax purposes.

Information Clearinghouse:

The Library also serves as a clearinghouse for the FIPR Institute’s (and its predecessor FIPR’s) research publications in paper format.  Tens of thousands of copies have been distributed, and several thousand are housed for future distribution.

As of October 2007, FIPR/FIPR Institute research reports are no longer published in paper format.  All reports published after that date are published exclusively in .pdf format, with the exception of two paper copies kept in the Library’s collection, and are available on the Institute’s website at http://www.fipr.poly.usf.edu.

Services:

Check-Out
The FIPR Institute Library will check out materials to Florida residents, and to anyone with borrowing privileges in the USF system, regardless of residency.  Materials in the circulating collection may be borrowed for up to three weeks.  Renewals may be allowed if no other patron has requested the material.

Reference Services and Literature Searches
The Library Director and FIPR Institute staff will attempt to answer all reference questions promptly.  They have access to a wide variety of databases and resources and generally can provide this service at no cost to the user.

Interlibrary Loan – Lending
The FIPR Institute Library’s collection is a unique resource that offers many items not found in any other Florida library.  The Institute is a member of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium.  It participates in the Distance Learning Library Initiative (DLLI) program of in-state delivery of library materials.  As a Florida Library Information Network member, it will provide interlibrary loans of books and copies of journal articles at no cost to virtually any library in Florida.  Users outside the state and international users may be asked to reimburse the Library for postage charges.

Interlibrary Loan – Borrowing
The FIPR Institute Library’s collection is included in the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) database.  Through Lyrasis and OCLC, the Library can also access collections in most libraries in the United States in order to borrow materials.  Some libraries that lend materials may charge for their services, and in these cases, the Institute will charge the local user accordingly.

Wi-Fi
The FIPR Institute Library offers a free wi-fi connection to users who bring in their own internet-accessible devices.
