![]() SHORT COURSE FROTHERS AND THEIR USE IN FLOTATION Thursday,
August 9, 2001, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Auditorium
of Polk Community College, Lakeland Campus Sponsored by: Florida Institute of Phosphate Research Objective: A
froth, as the term “froth flotation” indicates, is an inseparable part of
the flotation system. Frothers are used to stabilize the froth, but they are
also needed to enhance generation of fine bubbles and to aid
particle-to-bubble attachment. A poor understanding of the sub-processes in
which frothers participate contributes significantly to the incomplete
understanding of the flotation process. The
aim of this one-day school is to review chemistry, physico-chemical properties
and mode of action fundamentals of flotation frothers, and frother
applications. The course will discuss the role the frothers play in the liquid
and froth phases of the flotation system. One of the course objectives is to
identify of what we know (including most recent research results), of what we
think we know, and to identify possible engineering implications. The
course is designed for engineers working in mineral and particulate processing
industries, technical personnel working for reagent suppliers, and scientists
researching the field of flotation science and engineering. It is intended to
provide the course participants with an understanding of the principles of
flotation reagent selection and with the better ways of utilizing such
reagents.
The
Speaker: Professor
Janusz Laskowski of the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr.
Laskowski obtained all his degrees from the Silesian University of Technology
in Poland. He
conducted research in surface chemistry and minerals processing at various
institutions, such as the Lomonosov University of Russia, Mining Institute of
USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Imperial College in London, University of
Chile, University of Berkeley, the Ecole Nationale Superieure
de Geologie, France, and the University of Cape Town. Since 1982 Dr. Laskowski
has been a professor of mineral processing at the Department of Mining and
Mineral Process Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. In
1984, he founded the Coal Preparation international journal and has been
its editor-in-chief since. Dr. Laskowski has published almost 200 papers in
refereed journals and conference proceedings and recently edited four books: “Frothing
in Flotation”, “Colloid Chemistry in Mineral Processing”, “Frothing in
Flotation II”, and “Apparent and Microscopic Contact Angles”. Dr.
Laskowsky
has tremendous experience in teaching short courses, as the following list
shows: -The
Use of Polymers in Mineral Processing, Finland, 1999. This
